第二回 アロマテラピーでちょっとリラックスしませんか？

なさん、ゴールデンウィークはどのように過ごされましたか？高速道路料金1,000円を利用してロングドライブを楽しまれた方、はたまた連休中もずっと翻

訳の仕事や勉強でパソコンに向かっていた、という方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。遊びにも仕事にも疲れたときには、アロマテラピーで心も身体もリラック

スしてはいかがでしょうか？

前回宿題として提示しました「アロマテラピーの楽しみ方」は、アロマテラピーには欠かせないエッセンシャルオイルの使用説明書からの抜粋でした。英語ネイティブのお友達とも楽しめるように、英訳にチャレンジしてみましょう。

アロマテラピーの楽しみ方

エッセンシャルオイルの香りを生活の中に上手に取り入れることで素敵な空間を演出したり、気分をリフレッシュしたり工夫次第でいろいろと楽しめるものです

“エッセンシャルオイル”（精油）とは〜*1

植物の花・葉・果皮・樹皮・根・種子・樹脂などから抽出した100％天然の素材で大変濃縮されているものです。

楽しみ方1*2．芳香浴*3 ：シンプルに香りを楽しむ

ティシュやハンカチに数滴たらしたり、アロマランプ、ディフューザーで香りを楽しむ

楽しみ方2．お風呂で楽しむ

精油をお風呂のお湯に原液で垂らすと表面に浮きやすく、お肌に直接ついてしまうこともあるので下記の使い方*4 もおすすめです

＊フローラム ニュートラルエッセンシャルバス

キャップ1杯に精油5滴を混ぜてお湯に入れるとお湯によくまざります。また重曹（約大さじ1杯）・植物油（約小さじ1杯）・ハチミツ（約大さじ1杯）・牛

乳（約カップ2分の1）などによくブレンドしてからお湯にいれる

楽しみ方3．マッサージに使用する

マッサージ用の植物油にエッセンシャルオイルを混ぜて使用します。濃度は1％からがおすすめですがお肌の敏感な方は濃度に気をつけてお使いください。*5

1％濃度の場合

マッサージ用植物油（キャリアオイル） 5ml＋精油1滴 （0.05ml）

（例：ハンドマッサージ両手の場合 10ml＋精油2滴）

■エッセンシャルオイルご使用上の注意点*6

1．原液をお肌に直接つけない

2．揮発性があるのでキャップは必ずしめる

3．引火性があるので火気のそばに置かない

4．精油ビンはかならず立てて置く

5．保存は直射日光のあたらない比較的温度の変化のないところがおすすめです

エッセンシャルオイルは植物から取り出されたときから品質は変化していっております。

開封されましたらできるだけ早いうちにお楽しみいただくのがおすすめです

ご使用の目安： 柑橘系の精油 開封後約半年*7

　　　　　　　　　　その他の精油 開封後約1年

＊この期間内であっても色や香り*8 に変化があれば使用は避けましょう

Aromatherapy Tips

You

have numerous ways to enjoy aromatherapy in your daily life by being

creative with the use of essential oils to bring out their benefits,

such as diffusing their enchanting aromas in your room as well as

inhaling their vapors to refresh yourself.

What are essential oils?*1

They are highly concentrated, 100 % natural aromatic compounds

extracted from flowers, leaves, fruit skins, barks, roots, seeds,

resins, etc. of plants.

Tip 1*2 ：Diffusing for simple enjoyment

Enjoy an aroma by sprinkling a few drops of an essential oil onto a

tissue or handkerchief or using an aroma lamp or aroma diffuser.

Tip 2：Aromatic bath

The following methods*4

are recommended as essential oils tend to float on the surface if they

are added into hot water without being diluted and possibly stick onto

your skin.
＊Florame neutral essential bath oil: Add 5 drops of an

essential oil into a capful of the product to allow it to be smoothly

mixed into a bath. Or mix the oil well with baking soda (approx. one

tablespoon), vegetable oil (approx. one teaspoon), honey (approx. one

tablespoon), or milk (approx. 1/2 cup) and put it into hot water.

Tip 3：Massaging

Mix a few drops of an essential oil with some vegetable massage oil. A

1% solution or more is desirable but less might be better for sensitive

skin.*5

To make a 1% solution

5ml vegetable massage oil (carrier oil) with a drop of an essential oil (0.05ml)

（E.g. 10ml vegetable massage oil with 2 drops of an essential oil for both hands）

■ Precautions*6

1．Do not apply undiluted essential oils on the skin.

2．Keep caps tightly closed when not in use to avoid evaporation.

3．Keep away from fire or open flame as essential oils are flammable.

4．Always keep bottles in an upright position.

5．Keep at a constant temperature and away from direct sunlight.

Quality of essential oils changes right after they are extracted from plants.

Please finish the product as early as possible after opening.

Estimated shelf lives: Approx. 6 months after opening*7 for citrus oils

＊Avoid using essential oils with any change in color or aroma*8 even within the above periods.

    回の塾生さんの英訳は大変よくできています！満点です。まったく手を加える必要はないと思います。自分のクリエイティビティを上手に生かしていますし、文

    字の背後にある行動や背景を翻訳するときに上手に加えていて、素晴らしいです。今回の例文は商品に付いている注意書きですから、スペースがやはり限られて

    いますので、長さにも注意しましょう。

  • 前回と同じように、まずインターネットでアロマテラピーについて調べてみましたか。例えば、「フローラム」のサイトを見れば、いろいろヒントが得られますよ。

  • 今回の解説は原文に対する訳し方を中心にコメントします。コメントの番号は原文につけた番号に対応しています。

*1　 タイトルの「楽しみ方」と実際の「楽しみ方」の提案の間に「エッセンシャルオイル」の定義の段落が挟まれており、この定義は一文だけです。これは私の提案ですが、この定義を一番上の段落の最初に持っていくのはいかがでしょう？

「楽しみ方１，２，３」は難しいですね。そのまま “How to enjoy essential oils / Ways of enjoying

essential oils” として訳して、何回も繰り返すとうるさい感じがします。 塾生さんの “Tip” は非常に良い訳です。他に

“suggestion”

“recommendation”も考えられます。すでにタイトルで「楽しみ方」と一回言っていますから、「楽しみ方１，２，３」ともう繰り返して訳さな

くていいということですね。

「芳草浴」を “aromatic bath” に訳してここで使うと、次の「楽しみ方２」の「お風呂」と混乱してしまいます。“Aromatic

bath” は英語では、「お風呂」のことを意味するので、「楽しみ方１」の訳には使わず、次の２で使ったほうがいいです。

が英訳した際には、「下記の使い方」についての具体例がすぐ下に紹介されていますので、“following methods”

はなるべくその実際のmethods

と近い場所にくるように訳した方がより読みやすくなると感じましたが、みなさんはどう思われますか？以下私の英訳をご参照ください。

*5　 「濃度に気をつけてお使いください」のところは本商品の英語サイト(www.florame.com)

を見ると「量を少なくして使用する」ということが書かれています。 “People with sensitive skin should be

careful of the concentration level” と長々と書くより、直接に “Please use less”

と書いたほうがすっきりします。塾生さんの “less might be better” も素晴らしいですね。

この「注意点」の一行をそのまま訳すと、また長くなります。短くしたほうが消費者の注意を引き、確実に読んでもらえます。例えば、“safety

guidelines”

を使ってもいいでしょう。その下の注意書きも同じように短くした方が読みやすくなります。例えば、2と3には「ので」で二文がつながっていますが、訳すと

きは「ので」を訳さなくても、文の並び方で理由の関係が分かると思います。

*7　「目安」には “rough indication”, “approximate” という意味が含まれています。更に「約」も訳する必要はないのではないかと思いますので、“6 months after opening” で充分だと思います。

個人的な意見ですが、変質したエッセンシャルオイルの香りには aroma や scent 、fragrance

など普通いい匂いを連想するような言葉があまり適切ではないような気がします。そのため、私はニュートラルに匂いを意味する smell

を使っています。

【塾長英訳例】

How to enjoy aromatherapy

Essential

oils are 100% natural, highly concentrated oils extracted from the

flowers, leaves, fruit peels, tree bark, roots, seeds and resin of

plants. With a little creativity you can enjoy them in various ways and

include them in your daily life to create an aromatic living space or

to lift up your spirits.

Suggestion 1. Aromatic fragrance
Simply add a few drops to a tissue or handkerchief, or use an aroma lamp or diffuser.

Suggestion 2. Aromatic bath

When essential oils are added to hot water directly, they tend to float

on the surface where they come into contact with the skin. To avoid

this, it is best to use the following methods.

＊Add 5 drops of essential oil to 1 cap of Florame Neutral Essential

Bath and pour into the bath to help the oil blend in smoothly. Or you

can create a blend with baking soda (1 tablespoon), vegetable oil (1

teaspoon), honey (1 tablespoon) and milk (half cup) before adding to

the bath.

Suggestion 3. Aromatic massage

You can use essential oils for massaging by mixing with vegetable oils.

We recommend a mixture with 1% essential oil, but use less if necessary

for sensitive skin.

To prepare a 1% mixture:

5ml vegetable oil (carrier oil)+ 1 drop essential oil (0.05ml)

(E.g. 10ml + 2 drops essential oil for massaging with both hands)

■ Caution:

1．Do not apply directly on the skin.

2．Make sure the cap is closed properly. Essential oils evaporate easily.

3．Keep away from fire or open flame. Essential oils are highly flammable.

4．Make sure the bottle is kept upright.

5．Store under stable temperature conditions. Avoid direct sunlight.

The

quality of essential oils changes the moment they are extracted from

plants. Try to finish using a new bottle as soon as possible.

Please finish the product as early as possible after opening.

Approximate shelf life:

Citric oils – 6 months after opening

Other oils – 1 year after opening

＊Avoid using an essential oil if its color or smell changes within this period.

シントン斉藤信宏】米金融大手バンク・オブ・アメリカが２０日発表した０９年１〜３月期決算は、昨年秋以降の金融危機による市場の混乱がやや緩和したこと

などを受けて、純利益が前年同期比３・５倍の４２億４７００万ドル（約４１９０億円）と大幅な増益となり、市場予想も大幅に上回った。昨年末に経営統合を

完了した証券大手メリルリンチの収益なども業績の好転を下支えした。

　ただ、不況の深刻化などに伴う個人向けローンの焦げ付き増などを反映し、貸し倒れ引当金を大幅に積み増した。ルイス会長兼最高経営責任者（ＣＥＯ）は「歓迎すべき決算内容だ。ただ、失業の増加と景気悪化に伴う融資焦げ付きなどで不良債権の増加が続いている」と述べた。

　バンカメは昨年秋と今年１月、経営危機に直面し、米政府から公的資金４５０億ドルの投入を受けている。
