先月24日、ヘリコプター墜落事故の犠牲となった元NBAスター選手、Kobe Bryant(コービー・ブライアント)さんとその娘ジアナさんの告別式がロサンゼルスで行われました。

1月26日の事故発生後、バスケットボール界だけでなく、他のスポーツ界や経済界、政界の著名人からも追悼のメッセージが相次ぎ、スーパースターの突然の訃報に世界中のファンが悲しみにくれました。私も午前６時頃に速報を知った直後、声を上げて泣き崩れました。自分からかけ離れた雲の上の存在だったにもかかわらず、なぜか「親しい友人」が亡くなった気持ちになったのです。多くのファンが同じ感情になったと思います。

なぜKobeは「バスケットのスーパースター」の域を超えて、世界中の人々にこれほどまでに親しまれ、愛されたのでしょうか。思いつく理由をKobeへの追悼の思いを込めてまとめました。

 

１．17歳でNBAデビュー – 引退までレイカーズ一筋で20年プレー
高校時代からその才能が注目されていたKobeは、高卒でNBA入り。当時のNBA先発出場最年少記録を塗り替えます。その後、2016年に引退するまで、20年間レイカーズ一筋でプレーし、５回の優勝という輝かしい歴史を残しました。ファンにとっては17歳でデビューして37歳で引退したKobeの成長や成功、時には苦しみの時間を20年間共に歩んできたことになります。

２．プレースタイル
Kobeはデビュー当時から驚異的な身体能力を活かして、圧巻のプレーでファンを魅了します。彼は憧れていた「バスケットの神様・マイケル・ジョーダン」のプレースタイルを意図的に真似ていたので、ファンはジョーダンの姿を彼に重ねました。蝶のように舞い、蜂のように刺す。時には華麗なステップでダンスを踊るかのように美しいシュートを決め、時には大迫力のダイナミックなダンクを叩き込みました。さらにKobeは勝負強く、クラッチシュート(試合終盤の重要な局面で勝利を決定づけるシュート)をキャリアの中で何本も決め、チームを勝利に導きました。

４．伝説の１試合81得点
2006年1月26日。Kobeはトロント・ラプターズ戦で、「１試合に81得点」という衝撃的な偉業を達成します。これはどれくらい凄い事かと言うと、少し乱暴な比較になりますが、「野球で１試合に１人でホームラン８本」「サッカーで１試合に１人で８ゴール」ぐらいに凄い事です。

５．ハードワーク
Kobeは相当な努力家として知られていました。インタビューで自分の活躍の理由を聞かれると、「朝５時に起きて、誰よりも早くジムに行き、シュート練習をしている。自分が誰よりも練習しているから試合で活躍できる」と答ました。また、常に自分の弱点を研究して改善に取り組み、時にはNBAの先輩プレーヤー達に自らアドバイスをもらいに行く事も多かったそうです。

６．インテリジェンス
Kobeは父親(バスケット選手)の仕事の影響で幼少期をイタリアで過ごしたため、国際的で多文化に影響を受けた知性と感性を備えた人物でした。イタリア語とスペイン語が堪能で、時には試合中に相手を撹乱させるために、スペイン人チームメイトとスペイン語で話すこともあったのです。

７．教育者
Kobeは自分の培った経験や技術を若い世代に惜しみなく伝え、後進の育成に尽力した人物でした。多くの若いNBAプレーヤー達がKobeの元にやってきてはアドバイスを受け、一緒にトレーニングに励んでいました。また、WNBAの女性プレーヤーや子供向けのトレーニングを開催したり、大学でメンタルトレーニングについて講義を行うなど様々な教育活動を行っていました。さらに、娘のジアナさんが所属するバスケットチームの監督を務め、ジアナさんのバスケット選手として育成にも力を注いでいました。(Kobeがジアナさんに学ぶ機会を与えるため、NBAの試合を２人で観戦している姿がよく目撃されています。)

８．引退後の新たな挑戦・活躍
Kobeの活躍は引退後も続きます。2018年第90回アカデミー賞において自身の半生をバスケットに対する愛情と共に綴ったアニメーション作品「Dear Basketball」が短編アニメ賞を獲得。芸術の世界でも功績をあげたのです。他にも、自身のバスケット経験・メンタルタフネスをまとめた書籍や子供向けの絵本の出版など、常に新しい挑戦を続けていました。

９．インターネットの普及
Kobeのデビューは1996年。ちょうどその頃からインターネットが普及し始めたため、世界中の人がKobeの華麗なプレーを目にし、インタビューでの彼の発言を聞く機会が増えていました。私も暇さえあればYouTubeでKobeのプレー集やインタビュー動画、出演した番組を見ていました。

１０．人柄
何よりもKobeが愛された理由がこれだと思います。良き父であり、リーダー、教育者であった彼は、笑顔を絶やさない親しみやすい人でした。Kobeがサプライズゲストとして出演したテレビ番組をいくつか見ましたが、どの番組でも彼は「自分と出会えて心から喜んでいるファンを見るのが心から嬉しい」という表情を浮かべていました。また、Kobeより若い世代のNBAスター、ドウェイン・ウェイドはKobeについてこう語っています。「Kobeは人と話す時、その相手はその瞬間のKobeにとって一番大切な存在なんだ、と思わせてくれるような接し方をしていた。彼のそういうところが大好きだった。」

10 reasons why Kobe Bryant was so beloved

On the 24th of last month, a special ceremony was held in Los Angeles for former NBA star Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, who were the victims of a tragic helicopter crash.

After the accident on January 26th, fans around the world were devastated by the untimely passing of the superstar. Renowned figures from sports, business, and politics kept expressing their condolences on social media. I also burst into tears right after hearing the news at around 6 a.m. Even though he lived a life way beyond my imagination, and we had nothing in common, for some reason, I felt like I had just lost one of my closest friends. I think many fans around the world felt the same way.

Why has Kobe been so popular and loved by people around the world, beyond the scope of a “NBA superstar?” I have put together my personal reasons to try and commemorate the late, great Kobe.

１．NBA debut at the age of 17 — played for only the Lakers for 20 years until retirement
Kobe’s talent had been attracting attention since high school. He was a high school graduate when he entered the NBA, and he broke the record of the youngest NBA player to start in a game at the time. After that, he spent 20 years playing as a Laker, winning five championships by the time he retired in 2016. Fans witnessed Kobe, who debuted at age 17 and retired at age 37, grow, succeed, and sometimes suffer right in front of their eyes for 20 years.

２．Playstyle
Kobe showcased his unbelievable physical abilities since his debut and has attracted countless fans with his incredible performances over the years. He was intentionally imitating the style of basketball god — Michael Jordan, who was Kobe’s idol. Naturally, fans saw Kobe as the next Jordan. On the court, he moved with brilliant footwork, like a dancer, making beautiful jump shots and slamming his dunks with force. Kobe was also known as clutch. He made so many clutch shots late in the game to help the team win.

３．A brilliant record
Although there are many other superstar players in the NBA, Kobe stood out and is considered as one of the greatest players because he also has the track record of leading the team to win five championships, while others are struggling to win even one. (Michael Jordan won six times.) Other achievements include NBA League MVP, 2× NBA Finals MVP, 2× NBA Scoring Champion, 18× NBA All-Star, 4× NBA All-Star Game MVP, and two Olympic Gold Medals.

４．Legendary 81-point game
January 26, 2006. Kobe shocks the world with the iconic achievement of scoring 81 points in one game against the Toronto Raptors. For those who are unfamiliar with basketball, and these are somewhat rough comparisons, but it would be like hitting 8 homers in one baseball game or scoring 8 goals in a game of soccer.

５．Hard work
Kobe was known for his hard work. “I get up at 5 a.m., go to the gym earlier than anyone, and do shooting drills,” he said in an interview. “I practice more than anyone, so I can play with confidence in a game.” He also said he always studied his weaknesses and worked on them to improve, sometimes even going to other top NBA players to get their advice.

６．Intelligence
Kobe spent his childhood in Italy as his father was a professional basketball player there. So he was very multicultural, intelligent, and even fluent in Italian and Spanish. (Sometimes, he communicated in Spanish with his Spanish teammate during the game to confuse the opponents.)

７．Educator
Kobe was an educator who was willing to share his experiences and skills to help younger generations develop. Many young NBA players came to Kobe for advice and trained together with him. He also held training camps for WNBA players, high school students, and children, and offered lectures on mental training at universities. He was the coach of the basketball team where his daughter, Gianna, played. He devoted himself to raising Gianna as a basketball player as well. (She and Kobe were often seen at NBA games with Kobe trying to give her the opportunity to learn from the best.)

８．New challenges and achievements after retirement
Kobe continued to shine after his retirement. In the 90th Academy Awards in 2018, the animated short film “Dear Basketball,” which was about his life and love for basketball, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. He also made great contributions to the art world. He was always taking on new challenges, such as business ventures and books. He published a book in which he describes how he played and talks about his mental toughness, as well as publishing a children’s book.

９．Internet

The Internet played a big role in helping him gain global popularity. I was also on YouTube whenever I had the chance to watch Kobe’s highlights, interviews, and the shows he was on.

１０．Personality
Above all, I believe this is the biggest reason why Kobe was loved so very much. As a good father, leader, and educator, he was always friendly and smiling. I saw many TV shows where Kobe had shown up as a surprise guest, and in every show, he looked genuinely happy to meet the fans, who were themselves so full of joy to see him. Former NBA Star Dwyane Wade looked back on Kobe saying, “When he spoke to people, the way he interacted with them made whoever he was talking to feel like they were the most important person to Kobe at that moment. That’s what I loved about him.”

There’s still so much that I could write about Kobe here. The list goes on and on.
Kobe was one of the world’s favorite stars, beyond just sports, period.
The inspiration he left through the way he lived, with relentless pursuit and tremendous passion, is bigger than basketball.
Kobe will continue to shine forever in our memory.
